For those who want the thrill of investing according to developments that occur in real time, then investing in the currency market is great.

For the stock market, the instrument being traded is obviously, shares of stock of companies listed in a stock exchange market of a certain country. For the US, stock trading usually happens in two of the most renowned markets, the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq. Other prominent stock markets in the world are the FTSE in London, the DAX in Germany, the Nikkei in Tokyo and the HKSE in Hong Kong. Recently, foreigners have also been allowed to trade in stocks of other countries, but a broker has to be involved for these transactions to push through.

But whether an investor is more into the excitement that the foreign exchange market brings or the possibility of owning a part of a company in stock trading, he or she must be conscious that a number of factors have a direct effect on their investments. These factors include the movements in the economy and politics of a number of countries, particularly those in the G-8, the OECD and the European Union and the sentiment and mindset of the market. There are some days when markets are robust because of reports from institutions like Standard and Poors, for example. There are days when the markets are down because economic forecasts for Japan are not that good. Thus, it is important for investors to realize that with the promise of huge returns in any of these two instruments, there are corresponding risks that must be overcome and that they are quite volatile instruments.
