You want to make sure that the unique gifts that you will buy will be useful for the person you are giving the gift to, or at least they should be something that your recipients want. But how can you know for certain what your friends or loved ones want? You can start by listening closely to them. In everyday conversations, people say what they want to have or buy so you can use this as a starting point. If this fails, ask common friends what this person wants. Or better yet, check his or her social networking site to see their likes, what they usually talk about and more.

You are not buying for yourself

One common mistake that most people do when buying gifts is that they buy gifts for themselves and not for the intended recipient. Do not be selfish. Be honest about what they want, based on the research you made and stick to that.

Allow time to shop

This is where beginner gift buyers usually end up failing. People usually shop for gifts at the last minute, making their gift shopping trip a time-constraint. With the time pressure looming over their heads, people end up making wrong decisions or even worse, end up settling for cheap and generic gifts because of the lack of time.
