What Goes Into New Roof Installation

If you are thinking about replacing a roof, you will want to know what goes into new roof installation. Remember that roofing is not easy work. You need to learn many things including tearing off the old roof and putting on a new one. Cleaning up is also important. You have to make sure you pick up all those nails so that no one gets hurt. Roofing will take practice and you have to work slow and carefully. The weather is a big issue as well. Here are the steps in tearing off an old roof:

You will want a pitchfork, roofing nail removers, pry bars and shovels. Grab a corner of the shingle and peel it upwards with your hand. Try to peel off large pieces. This will save you time.

Then use the pitch fork and roofing shovel. You can tear off the shingles and the pull up the nails. This could take a long time if you don't have enough help. Clear the shingles completely off the roof.

The waste can be thrown off the roof into a tarp or trailer. It will be taken to the dump when the roof is done.

When the old shingles are off you can use a nail magnet to pick up any stray nails lying around.

Installing the New Roof

Put on the roofing paper. You have to use black 30 weight paper. Start at the bottom edge and unroll the paper and let it hang over by � inch.

Use roofing tacks by hand or with a nail gun. Along the bottom and edge space them four feet apart. In the middle space them two feet apart. The top edge should have them a foot apart.

The second row should overlap the first by one line. Lines are marked on the paper. Nail down the second row like the first.

Continue until the roof is covered. Cover the crest with another row of paper letting the sides go down over the crest. When you get to a roof hip over lap it. When you get to a valley overlap it. Herringbone the paper so that the water could get down without touching any wood. You have to create a waterproof sheath before you put the shingles on.

Shingling

1. Start your shingling at the bottom of the roof in the corner. Overlap the hips, valleys using the herringbone technique. Cover the whole roof.

2. Then "cap off" the roof using single shingle tabs. You have to overlap them along the length of the crest, hips and valleys.
3. Once the shingling is done, the roof is finished.
