If you want to become a great goalie, you must have a great goalie coach, because other wise it is like a blind leading blind. Also, when was the last time you heard that a driver instructors had never actually driven a car himself?

Below I have listed features of great goalie coach. If your goalie coach doesn't have what I have listed below, he is not as good goalie coach as you should have, if your goal is to play in the NHL.

Playing Experience
Have you heard of a fighter pilot instructor who didn't know how to fly the plane himself? No, you haven't. My question is: How good can a goalie coach be if he has not played at least high level junior hockey?

The coach must have his own playing experience in order to be able to see small details and to know how the goalie (you) feels. Ask yourself, "Has my coach tried and tested his teachings himself at least at Major Junior level?

The mental side of the game is also something a coach can teach only if he has experienced the pressure, doubts and the high of making big saves in front of thousands of people. The only way he can know what you are going through is to have experienced it.

When your coach has played at Major Junior level or higher, he has been through situations that you will go through and knows what it takes to get to the next level. Obviously the higher your coach has played, the better it is for you.

Coaching Experience
It takes years to become a good goalie, so why wouldn't it take years to become a good goalie coach? I've found that coaching experience, leadership experience and a formal coaching education are equally as important as playing experience for a goalie coach. We all know that there are many things you can learn only by experience and this applies to coaching too. Coaching experience is something that can't be bought or learned in a classroom.

Ability To Teach
It's amazing how many coaches I've met who've been really good goalies, some of them even former NHL players, but can't teach very well or they just don't like to teach. Experience as a goalie doesn't automatically mean that a person is a good coach. What counts the most is how well the coach transfers the knowledge and wisdom to you, because it doesn't matter what the coach can do, just what you can do.

A Good Coach Also:
1. Gets his athletes to believe in themselves
2. Teaches not only hockey but life
3. Is humble and willing to challenge himself
4. Is flexible and open minded
5. Knows himself
6. Understands that everyone is individual and different
7. Takes the time to listen to and educate his athlete's parents
8. Stands behind his words
9. Is straightforward, honest and loyal
10. Keeps the learning environment safe
11. Stays positive
12. Makes training fun.
