To some people, collecting comes naturally. It may have originated from a childhood interest that later progressed into having a full-blown collection. An example of this might be little boys who enjoyed reading comic books about the adventures of their favorite superhero. Eventually, as they grow up, they start enjoying acquiring comic books as collectibles and not just for reading. Little girls who used to play with a number of cute Barbie dolls may grow up and find that their old dolls have become a part of history. Their interest then turns to collecting them and not playing with them anymore.

There are also those who are consciously beginning to gather items for their collection. They are in active and mindful pursuit of the keepsakes and collectibles that they want to place in their collection.

Collecting keepsakes is an enjoyable and sometimes profitable hobby. This hobby is practically all-encompassing and non-discriminating. Anyone can take up this pastime and spend on it however much they are capable of spending and are willing to spend. There are collectibles that one can get cheaply and will not cost an arm and a leg to acquire. Of course, there are also those whose price tag is very high and which collectors may be interested in because they are rich or because they intend to take home some profit from those collector's items.

The wonderful thing about collecting as a hobby is that each item will surely come with memories of its own. The reminiscence may come in the adventure of pursuing the item itself and then placing it in one's collections, or in what the item represents. The song played by a vinyl record, for example, may remind a collector about the birth of her first child. An unusually shaped rock may take the collector back to a time when he is still able to travel to and explore faraway places. An old coin which is about two hundred years old that was passed on to someone can propel him to learn more about the time during which the said coin was still in circulation. Collectibles can stir up memories, happy or sad, with which the collector can relieve his past experiences or learn from lessons of the past.

Collecting can also make someone feel a sense of accomplishment. It truly takes an effort, sometimes little and sometimes aggressive, to gather items for one's collection. Collector's items can come from somewhere near or from a faraway foreign place, and they can cost anywhere from nothing to a small fortune to acquire. It may take only minutes or a lot of years to negotiate its acquisition. The bottom line is that, because the collector expended some effort to have it in his collection, it is natural for him to feel as if he has accomplished something by finally acquiring an item.

Toward the end of someone's life, having a collection can make him feel that his life was a worthwhile adventure. Having something to pass on to the younger generation can also conjure a sense of self-satisfaction for him.
