Bulbs generally take a lot of time to grow. It takes several months before you see its thriving flowers. But nowadays, you need not wait for months for this event. You can easily force the bulbs to grow its flowers even if it's not yet due by controlling the environment that bulbs need in order to bloom. Here's how.

Chilling Period

The chilling period of bulbs differ according to its type but generally it will take 12-16 days to complete its chilling period. The first necessary aspect of the chilling process is the stipulation of a cold and dark environment. The temperature should be between 40-45 degrees Fahrenheit foe best results. An empty cellar, unheated garage or even on the vegetable compartment of your own refrigerator can be the perfect spot for forcing bulbs. When you decide to place it in the refrigerator, make sure that you do not mix it with fruits as it can emit ethylene gas that may be detrimental to the bulbs' growth. Also, in this period, cover your plant bulbs with dry leaves and pine boughs to help insulate the plant bulbs.

Lighting Needs

After, the chilling period, you might notice roots and tops on growing. At this point, you now need to transfer the plant bulbs in a well-lit spot. However, direct sunlight should be avoided. Also, if the sunlight is coming from a single direction, rotate the pots periodically for the equal distribution of sunlight to keep the stem grow straight. The temperature may now increase but up to 65 degrees Fahrenheit only. Keep a temperature of 60 degrees Fahrenheit for about three weeks, until it is ready to bloom.

Potting

The pots that must be used must contain drainage holes to of course facilitate easy drainage of water. That is needed because too much moist and water may rotten the plant bulbs. If you are going to use these as a ornament material for your home and want to place it on a ceramic pot, then you can first plant bulbs on plastic containers which you may later on slide in place to the illustrious design pots for display. Aftercare

After the forced bloom fades, it will be hard for the bulbs to bloom immediately again. As a matter of fact, some just discard these bulbs after forcing it, but this can be avoided. You just have to plant the forced bulbs on your lawn and treat them like an outdoor bulb. Give them bulb foods, water everyday and extra care and they will surely be revived. Yes, it may take long for it to bloom once more in the succeeding year but you're assured that it would still bloom no matter what and let you enjoy its splendid sight.
