The sad news is there are fake pearls sold that are worthless. To check if you are not getting a fake, bite it at your front teeth's edge. A fake one will feel even while a genuine one will feel a bit sandy and gritty. This is a usual way of testing a pearl's authenticity. Ask the jewelry store if such a test can be performed on their pieces.

Fake pearls are those that look perfectly flawless and feel light when bounced in the hands. Imitation pearls look grainy when they are inspected under a loupe or a 10magnifier. If the price is extremely cheap, no doubt the pearl is a fake
