Watches have mechanical parts that need to be checked and serviced from time to time. This is usually done by a professional but you can do some easy services yourself. Here are things you can do to ensure your watch is always in good condition.

When you swim, make sure to remove your watch. If it is water resistant, ensure that the crown is completely pushed in. When it is wet, refrain from operating it. If you used it while swimming in the beach, use fresh water to rinse it afterwards and then dry it properly. When you submerge yourself in warm water with the watch on, you will see that the time may have slightly changed. This will be corrected as soon as it goes back to its usual temperature.

Mechanical watches are more affected by extreme temperatures than their quartz counterparts. When your watch gets into a temperature outside of the "14�F to 95�F range, its electrical parts will not work properly. Extreme temperature will lessen the life of the battery and its fluid will also leak. If yours is a digital watch, its liquid crystals will become extremely dark during high temperature while they will become slow when it is freezing.

If you have an analogue watch, magnets can affect its electric motor's performance thus the hands will not be able to function properly. Your watch will stop or lose or gain time. When it leaves the magnetic field, it will go back to normal after you have reset it. To avoid this from happening, make sure not to place your watch near refrigerator magnets, medical equipment, loudspeakers, headphones, blenders, electrical mixers and other equipment. If you have digital quartz, this will not be affected by magnets.

To clean watches, refrain from using harmful chemicals such as gasoline, alcohol, detergents, paints, adhesive and cosmetic sprays. The band may also deteriorate. Instead use water and mild soap to take off the dirt and then rinse and dry it carefully using a soft cloth. Sweat may also harm your watch therefore make sure to dry it immediately. If you have a leather strap, it will absorb sweat most during summer. Wear it slightly loosened during hot temperature. When the strap is tight it can also stop air from passing between the wrist and strap thus a rash may happen due to perspiration.

Make sure that after you finish cleaning your watch you place it in an area that is well-ventilated. Do not place it inside a container that is sealed. Ensure also that it is dry before keeping it away.
