By the 1960s, jeans have become a fashion staple in the West.

By the 1970s, jeans have become very personalized items. Flared and bell-bottoms have become famous. Embroideries of flower and abstract designs, transfers, bells on the sides, appliqu�, studs and eyelets, and other designs were incorporated in jeans. They have even been utilized for anti-war protests , with political statements written with graffiti being sported on them. Hippies and flower power people have been closely associated with denim jeans, and one cannot go to a pop music concert without wearing it.

The method of stone washing and artificial fading or distressing also became popular. Moreover, jeans that come in all imaginable colors also rode high. Aside from Levi's jeans, designer denim jeans were also marketed by other brand names. Armani, Calvin Klein and Guess produced their own designer jeans, capitalizing on the popularity of jeans.

Black jeans also had its heyday, although the signature blue jeans have always been the classic favorite. Jeans were notably widespread in the '90s, and dark blue and faded wash have had their own time in terms of popularity. By the latter part of the first decade of the new millennium, the pale blue washed color has again dominated the spring collections, and colors of all kinds are also starting to make their appearance once again.

The use of the denim fabric to make other clothing wear aside from jeans never got out of style either. All kinds of bags, jackets, Basque corsets, and even footwear have been made with denim. Denim jeans seem to be here to stay, regardless of how fashion trends come and go through the decades.
