Refinishing Formica Countertops is Better than Replacing

Formica is a leading maker of laminate material, less expensive than quartz and stain resistant. When your Formica countertop becomes accidentally scorched or chipped or the color is outdated, decide on whether refinishing Formica countertops is better than replacing them. Some advantages of refinishing are the cost, and saving the mess and time involved with replacement.

Many materials of countertops resist stains by being maintained properly. With care and sealing they still aren't 100 percent stain proof. A rare stain is repaired easily with a scrubber, abrasive cleaner or fine sandpaper in cases of extreme stains. If impossible to repair then you may want to try your hand at refinishing or painting.

Good preparation, good ventilation, and patience are the keys to refinishing and painting your countertops for under $100. First, remove everything from the counters and plan on working in your kitchen for two days at least. Clean countertops with a cleaner that has an ammonia base, rinse, dry, and clean once more. If you plan on painting the backsplash, be sure to clean it the same.

Sand the countertop and backsplash surfaces lightly to remove any grease that is embedded and provide a surface that will help the primer adhere better. Remove dust completely by wiping with a damp cloth. Tape the walls, floor, and cabinets, and anything else you don't want painted. The paint that is recommended tends to go everywhere. Apply the primer, a good one is Kilz. Using a foam roller, work slowly, avoiding air bubbles. If you get all this done in one day, you are doing great, stop here and let it dry overnight.

The next morning, sand again very lightly and wipe surfaces down to remove the dust. Rustoleum has a product that is called Stone Creations and holds beautifully, offers many colors, and has an interesting pebbled texture. Buy three cans, at least, to have plenty of the color lot to match when touching up. Apply first coat and wait until completely dry before applying the second coat. Fill in gaps as necessary and let this coat also dry completely.

Apply the polyurethane coat slowly with a foam roller avoiding bubbles of air. This finish may be repeated as much as you want as long as you let every application to dry completely. The polyurethane finish can be applied again months later; just make sure you have a dry and clean surface.

After finding that refinishing Formica countertops is better than replacing them, here are a few tips to keep them looking new. Treat countertops like any other new countertop. Knives and hot pans will harm the finish so don't cut on it without a cutting board, and use hot pads under the hot pans. Clean often with water, dry up spills immediately, and don't use abrasive cleaners.
