Growing In Christ

I have spent the better part of my life in service to a splendid and loving maker. I have decided that I will spend the others of my life in service to him too. Amongst the good things of being a Christian is the wonderful folks I have actually come across along the way. Some of them busted, some hurting, some rising from the ashes of what once was, yet regardless we all have Christ in common; that is, those who have chosen to give up their life in exchange for His. God is fantastic in that typically the people He brings into our lives are individuals who are going to help us grow in one way or another. "As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another." (Proverbs 27:17 NIV)

This morning, during a conversation with a dearly adored good friend of mine, I recognized that I don't grow when all I'm doing is reading devotionals. Do not misunderstand me devotionals are fantastic and are able to actually contact ones heart about one thing or another; I know that God utilizes them. Nevertheless, it is important to indicate that we can't truly grow unless we are in the Lord ourselves. Reading strictly devotionals does not add to that. "Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me." (John 15:4 NIV)

If we want to grow we need to be in the word and prayer ourselves. A devotional, although splendid for inspiration, is not being in God's word for oneself. This is the why; a devotional is what is created when one spends time in God's word, praying pertaining to it, dissecting it, and seeking the knowledge and understanding of the Holy Spirit. When you check out a devotional, you are reading just what God has spoken to someone else. Not that an individual won't be able to learn from exactly what God has certainly educated someone else, however it is not just what we should live on as a devotee of Christ.

Keep in mind when you are striving to grow as a follower of the living God that you are divinely made and he has picked you for such a time as this. Get to know your LORD and seek him, review his word and uncover exactly what he would advise you today. He is worth the hazard, since he will definitely never let you down. (See Deuteronomy 31:6 & Hebrews 13:5)
