When products are introduced as dietary supplements, it has to have claim. A claim is defined as the functional aspect of a supplement. It is important to recognize the various claims made on different products because this is where their purposes are derived from. The following types of claims are currently recognized:

Health. When a whole food, a component of a whole food, or an ingredient in a dietary supplement is related to the function of reducing the possibility of developing a disease or an unhealthy condition, a health claim is recognized. Most herbal supplement products may offer this claim.

Nutrient Content. When a specific amount of nutrient is found in a dietary supplement, the claim is classified as nutrient content. Note that not all diet supplements equally contain all of the ingredients mentioned in the definition cited above.

Function or Structure. Dietary supplements that fall under this claim category are those that have an effect on specific organs of the body (structure) and/or their functionality without it necessarily being a disease. This complements the clarification above that a supplement can never be treated as a medicine as it is not intended to be used as a cure for any ailments . When the difference between function or structure claim and medical claim is defined, the latter pertains to statements of being able to cure, thwart, treat, and even diagnose a disease.

When buying dietary supplement in the market, it is important to recognize the physical signs and make sure that these are approved or at least regulated by FDA. A few tips are as follows:
- The word 'supplement' should be clearly written on the product's package
- The quantity of a package's contents should be specific.
- The manufacturer and distributor should be known.
- The product should include directions for usage.

While it is important for buyers to look at the external packaging of diet supplements, the specification of ingredients should also be noted. Listing the formulation of a supplement helps in knowing what you need, how much you need per supplement composition, and how much nutrient you will be getting per serving size. Note that there have been scientific justifications for a supplement overdose and there have been reports of certain side effects.
