Clean the Air Filter

You should devise a regular time schedule of cleaning your air filter after going through 15 tanks of fuel or after 5 hours of use, whichever comes first. Dirty air filters decreases the air flow and causes your saw to work harder than necessary and to use more fuel. Chain saw air filters are porous; therefore, you can remove it, wash it in hot soapy water, rinse in cool water and let it dry before putting it back in the saw. You should replace the filter once a year.

Inspect the Muffler Gasket and Spark Arrestor

Make sure to inspect the muffler and clean the spark arrestor after every 25 hours of use. Take off the muffler and spark arrester and inspect the muffler gasket. You should replace the muffler gasket if it's damaged and use a wire brush to clean carbon buildup and rust from the spark arrestor. Replace it if it's broken or clogged.

Remove the Fuel and Clean the Fuel Filter

When storing the saw for longer than three months, either drain the engine or put fuel stabilizer in the tank. You can either run the engine until all the fuel is gone or pour some fuel stabilizer into the tank and let the engine run for a few minutes. Replace the fuel filter once a year, no matter how much you've used the saw. To remove the fuel filter, run the saw until it's out of gas, remove the fuel cap and its retainer, pull the filter out of the fuel tank, and replace it.

Replace Those Spark Plugs

The spark plugs have a tendency to get coated with the fuel mixture that is inside the saw. You should regularly inspect the spark plug and replace it once a year. You should also adjust the spark plug gap as the owner's manual instructs.

Use the Right Oil and Gas

Chain saws have are two-cycle engines that gets its lubricant from the oil that is mixed with the gasoline. Adding oil keeps the engine from burning out. Use a synthetic, two-cycle, air-cooled engine oil mixed with gas at the ratio specified in the owner's manual. Never use gas blended with ethanol or methanol because it can become acidic and can damage your engine if left in the tank after use.
