A refrigerator has two main components, an evaporator and condenser coils which have liquid coolant circulating through them with a motor and compressor. This refrigerant gets cooled going through the condenser coil, flowing on to the evaporator coil. The air is now cooled by contact of the coil. Remember that the condenser coil is outside and evaporator coil is inside.

Most all freezers and Amana refrigerators are frost-free units with a heater to turn on automatically to defrost inside the unit. After defrosting, the thermostat is automatically switched to a cooling mode, and frost is unable to build up. Other main refrigerator parts in the cooling system are heaters, switches, thermostats, fans, and condensers. If you are a do-it-yourselfer, testing and replacing some refrigerator parts can be done fairly inexpensively, but some need a professional serviceman.

In order to keep repairs to a minimum cost level, certain things need to be done, such as, cleaning condenser coils on the bottom and back of the refrigerator, along with defrosting often if not a frost-free unit. Don't overload with an excessive amount of warm food, keep the freezer full, and pack food in freezer loosely to let air flow through easily. Also, keep the door closed, and replace seals when they wear out.

To test the seals, place a dollar bill over the seal and close the door, if no resistance when pulling out, the seals are bad and need replaced. Dust on the refrigerator coils makes it hard for them to lose heat and works harder to cool the food. Before working on the freezer or refrigerator when replacing Amana refrigerator parts, make sure you have it unplugged. Thoroughly clean the seals and coils properly, in order to save money on parts as they won't need replaced as often.
