It's very important to carefully embed the stakes into the ground, regardless of the material that they are constructed out of. Metal tent stakes can quickly become bent, and a plastic one can easily break off if it is hit at the wrong angle. The best way to secure the stakes into the ground is to use a rubber mallet, which is safe for both materials – do not use rocks or other similar objects to pound the tent stakes down.
When using a standard 2 person tent, it's also possible to simply use tie downs to attach it to the surrounding trees. However, this is usually not a very good idea if the wind is strong. If one is planning on using this method, then it should be noted that the rope should not be allowed to have any slack. Instead, it should form a straight line from the tent to the tree that it is tied around. The more slack the rope has, the less secure the tent will be, which means it won't stay in place very well without weight on the inside.
In addition to making sure that one's 2 person tent is properly secured down so that it doesn't incur damage from the wind, it's also important to remember that the tarp underneath the tent should be secured, as well. If it isn't, then it will flap against the tent, which can prevent one from sleeping well during the night. In most cases, an appropriately sized rock will do just fine. However, some tarps are designed so that they can be secured with the same stakes that are used on the tent, so don't forget to check for reinforced holes on the corners of the tarp.
