A tent can be created out a variety of different types of fabric, and the one that is used is determined by the overall purpose of the tent. In the past, a camping tent was usually made out of canvas because it is a very durable fabric that doesn't wear down quickly. Unfortunately, it is also very heavy and cumbersome when it comes time to put the tent away. This is why many tent manufacturers have turned to making their tents out of newer, more efficient types of fabric that aren't as difficult for a single person to set up.
As one of the newer types of fabric, nylon is another material that a camping tent can be made out of. One of the biggest draw backs to using a tent that has been made out of nylon is that it sometimes isn't as long lived as canvas is. However, that being said, a nylon tent that has been made by a quality manufacturer is still worth purchasing because they still hold up well for the type of use that most campers put them through. The outer shell of many newer tents is made out of nylon.
Polyester is another common material that one can find a camping tent made out of. Like nylon, it's a very light weight material, which makes it easier to roll up and store. On that same note, thin material is often more prone to ripping, so it's important to take care when disassembling one's tent so that it doesn't get caught on rocks and debris that are on the ground. This is another reason why one should always place their tent on top of a protective tarp so that it isn't directly exposed to the ground. Because of its light weight, polyester is often used to make the mesh screen that is incorporated into tents to prevent insects from getting inside the main shell.
Some camping tents are made out of one of the above fabric types and then mixed with a special flame or water resistant material. This type of camping tent is usually more expensive, and it may or may not be as durable as some of its counterparts. Although, a well made tent that is both flame and water resistant is definitely an asset to anyone's camping gear collection provided that it is made out of a material that doesn't easily rip.
