It brings back Qi or the natural balance in life which is believed to be found in all living organisms. This life energy goes around 12 energy paths or meridians found all over the body as they are each attached to a certain body system or organ. There are more than a thousand points in this system that can be stirred upon applying pressure.

This type of alternative method can be done alone by placing light or hard pressure to a specific point using the fingers, thumbs, elbows and knees. Such points are found on certain locations of the body responsive to pressure. If the patient produces a harsh response when his points are pressed, this means a wrong spot was pressed. These points are usually pressed for 15 to 30 seconds but there are certain kinds of massages when the pressure could last for a minute or two. This is done in series in one session, much like a 30-minute massage, and techniques include rubbing, pressing, kneading, patting, chafing, mild stretching, wiping, rub rolling, scrubbing, grasping and performing corrective exercises.

It is important to find the right acupressure points in this kind of massage and this can be done through proper research. Once these points are found, a person can start applying pressure on them for half a minute. The next thing to do would be to apply pressure on the point found at the opposite side. A sudden release of tension would be felt once this is done correctly but if relief is not achieved, it is then necessary to look for another point until the desired effect is felt.

There are many advantages one can achieve with pressing these points correctly. The first is that it can provide pain relief and eliminate anxiety and stress which can cause health problems. The second is that it can help treat certain health disorders. The menstrual cycles of women are regularly maintained, childbirth pain is relieved and energy is enhanced. It should be remembered that acupuncture is a different thing but it does share the idea of Qi which are stimulated through a needle treatment instead of a massage.

It is important to keep in mind that acupressure should not be done half an hour before and after a bath, hot shower or a heavy workout. Points where there are varicose veins, bruise, wounds, mole or wart should not be applied pressure on. Pregnant women are advised not to go through this type of massage. Serious injuries should first be given medical treatment.

Nowadays there are electrical devices that are used on pressure points which have dismayed certified therapists. People can now use such tools and devices on their own so as to stimulate such points. They can also use it to apply pressure on another person as long as they know where the points are located.

With acupressure, the body would benefit from a natural and healthy massage.
