The history of Pensacola, Florida starts long prior to the recognized founding of the modern town in 1698. The area around present-day Pensacola was inhabited by Native American individuals thousands of years before the historical location. The traditional time begins with the arrival of Spanish explorers in the 16th century. In 1559 Tristan de Luna set up a short-lived settlement at Pensacola Bay which came to be one of the very first European-established settlement deals in what is now the continental United States; nevertheless, it was quickly abandoned. In 1821, with Andrew Jackson as provisional governor, Pensacola became part of the United States.
