The history of Pensacola, Florida starts long prior to the recognized founding of the modern town in 1698. The area around present-day Pensacola was inhabited by Native American individuals thousands of years before the historical location. The traditional time begins with the arrival of Spanish explorers in the 16th century. In 1559 Tristan de Luna set up a short-lived settlement at Pensacola Bay which came to be one of the very first European-established settlement deals in what is now the continental United States; nevertheless, it was quickly abandoned. In the late 17th century the Spanish gone back to the location to discovered the modern-day Pensacola as an outpost from which to defend their claims to Spanish Florida. The town's strategic however isolated position caused it altering hands among different Western powers an amount of times; at different times it was held by the Spanish, the French, the British, the United States, and the Confederate States of America.

The original inhabitants of the Pensacola Bay area were Native American peoples. At the time of European contact a Muskogean-speaking tribe understood as the Pensacola resided in the region. The location's taped history starts in the 16th century, when the first European explorers came there. Early search of Pensacola Bay (called Polonza or Ochuse) covered decades, with Ponce de León (1513), Pánfilo de Narváez (1528), and Hernando de Soto (1539) plus others charting the location.

Due to prior exploration, the very first settlement in the region was big, landing on August 15, 1559, and led by Don Tristán de Luna y Arellano with over 1,400 individuals on 11 ships from Vera Cruz, Mexico. In 1821, with Andrew Jackson as provisional governor, Pensacola became part of the United States.
