The 10 Commandments is a document that is not actually unique to Christianity. In fact, these ten statues that originated from the hand of God himself has been revered and obeyed even before the advent of the Christian movement. Other faith traditions like Islam and Judaism also hold these commandments very dear.

The 10 Commandments are absolutely fundamental in the lives of both Christians and Jews. People from both faiths express a firm desire to adhere to these commandments and live a life of adherence to such moral statutes. Sometimes, these commandments are seen as something beyond mere obligation. Remember that we can express our love for the divine by obeying the principles handed down from heaven.

The Importance of the Decalogue in Christianity and Judaism

Both Jewish and Christian scripture is replete with details as to how these commandments have been handed down to mankind. Moses is the key figure that is highlighted in the events that dictate how God transmitted these commandments.

Tradition also speaks of the use of tablets of stone to contain God's fundamental laws. There were actually two sets of stone tablets that Moses carried down from Sinai. The first set was smashed by the good prophet of the Lord when he saw how easy it was for Israel to forget the Lord their God as they worshipped a graven image. Moses then fashioned a new pair of stone tablets that also contained the 10 Commandments of God.

Both Christians and Jews observe that these commandments are terse enough so that there is almost no room for varying interpretation. Some theologians even say that they are so explicit that no one ought to make any mistakes as to how these commandments should be interpreted.

That having been said, it is interesting that there are still variances in the way certain laws in the Decalogue are interpreted. For instance, the subject of the Sabbath is one that has been debated for quite some time. The question of when should be the day of rest is debated even in Christian circles. Not only is the day of worship debated but how worship should be conducted in that day is also an issue. Other issues such as killing and adultery have stirred up a bit of controversy.

The 10 Commandments play an vital role in Roman Catholic life. These commandments are not only seen as significant for the spiritual wellbeing of Catholics but they are also seen as an important basis for social justices. In fact, a lot of the fundamental laws in various countries echo the principles stipulated in the Decalogue.

The Decalogue in Islam

Like in the other faith traditions mentioned here, Islam also holds dear the laws handed down by God from Sinai. The Qur'an may not have quoted the actual laws as they were written in the tablets but this holy book also appraised the laws mentioned therein. The 10 Commandments in this context can be seen as a universal law that expresses fundamental principles that anyone can agree with.
