The world is in an age wherein the individual, the Self, is given extreme priority in everybody's lives. Today's developed world has placed a newfound emphasis on achieving one's dreams and becoming self-actualized, reaching one's full potential, so to speak. It makes one wonder if this prioritization of the individual self has become one of the reasons behind the increase in divorce rates-and demand for marriage therapists-over the past few decades.

A marriage is basically a sacred bond wherein two people decide to no longer live in isolation, and instead begin to share their lives with a person whom they love deeply. A divorce happens when the two people no longer wish to live with each other and decide to once again go on their separate ways. Now that there is so much emphasis placed on individuality, it seems couples have less time and patience for solving the problems underlying their relationships. Instead of trying to fix a relationship that is no longer sweet and fun, people more easily move on in life and explore new relationships.

On one hand one might think that this is a glorious example of the heightened amount of freedom people have been experiencing in the 21st century. Instead of "wasting time" with something that doesn't seem to work out, why not just move on and find something new? But on the other hand one can also argue that it is also a sign that we no longer believe in the value of commitment and that promises of loving each other "till death do us part" no longer have to be taken seriously. This genuinely begs the question of whether the so-called freedom to back out o of commitments easily is real freedom or just laziness and impotence in disguise.

Thankfully, the select group of people who still believe in fixing something that is damaged, in this case relationships, can actually hire marriage therapists to help in repairing their matrimonial bonds. These therapists are professionally trained individuals who have undergone formal studies on how to mend damaged relationships and resolve relationship conflicts. Indeed there comes a point wherein the fighting between a married couple seems to be unceasing, and as such, the availability of these professionals is a great boon to mankind. The availability of marriage therapists can also serve as a glimmer of hope in the face of the rising rates of divorce; it shows that there are still those couples who believe in trying to work things out with one another before letting go and giving up completely.

Inevitably, not everybody can be persuaded to attend such therapeutic sessions, especially considering that this kind of counseling requires time, money, and effort. But what people may overlook is that marriage therapists actually spent years of their lives learning specifically how to fix damaged relationships. Clearly, working with these professionals ought to be worth a try at least. Only if the therapy continues but wields no results or improvements should a marriage be abandoned completely.
