Snowbirds are Canada citizens who go to the United States (or any warmer country for that matter) in order to escape the winter months. They are aptly named as such because like birds of flight, they fly away from the impending winter months to somewhere warmer. This article will discuss a specific concern for most snowbirds. That is travel insurance.

Snowbird insurance: Travel Insurance

The general term is travel insurance. Simply put, a person is insured by an insurer from the moment of travel up to the moment of return. The travel insurance coverage is of course limited by specific risks which are insured against. And it is specified in the policy. For example, Mr. C, a Canadian citizen who flies to the United States, insures himself against accidents incurred while on vacation. If Mr. C causes an accident and does not commit any acts that make the policy void or any acts exempted from the risk, then the insurer will pay in his behalf.

Travel health insurance only insures the health of the person taking out the policy. As a general rule only health related expenses are reimbursed by the insurer, if the policy is strictly travel health insurance. Of course this does not stop the same insured from paying additional fees to add non-health related coverage items.

Snowbird Insurance: Coverage

As mentioned earlier the coverage of travel insurance depends upon the type of insurance. To simplify the concept you can say that there are two types of coverage. One that attaches to a policy based on the type|the specific name of the insurance and the other is added on to the original policy by agreement|consent of the parties to an insurance contract.

For example, Mr. D normally takes out a policy for travel health insurance every time he travels during the colder months. He has lost his baggage several times already during his trips. He would be best off requesting his insurer to add a loss of baggage coverage into his basic travel health coverage. The alternative would be to pay for two separate insurance policies one for health and the other for lost baggage. And in most cases this will be more expensive.

Snowbird Insurance: Time Frame

The length of time within which the insurance is in effect depends on the agreement of the parties. The usual timeframe includes but is not limited to:
Per travel, regardless of the length of stay
Per travel with a maximum time frame of coverage
For a fixed number of days regardless of the number of times or places travelled

Snowbird Insurance: Is it Affordable?

First you need to define affordable. The wrong definition involves the phrase "for the least amount of money". The right definition of affordable involves the words "the most coverage, for the longest period of time, for the least amount of money".

Why Not Just Risk It?

Some travelers think of insurance for travelers as an added burden that may or may not be useful. However, you need to understand that getting hospitalized or requiring a physician to conduct a medical examination in the United States costs at least 10x more expensive than it is in Canada. Are you willing to risk paying that much?
