Travel insurance is a type of insurance that is designed for the benefit of individuals on a journey. Just like any other type of insurance it is meant to distribute risk. The rationale is simple, travelers are exposed to risks that cost a lot of money to pay by themselves. Insurers promise the individual that in case specific events occur then they will handle payment up to the covered amount or up to the full extent of injury or damage. In exchange the traveler has to pay a premiums on a regular basis. This article will discuss the different types of travel insurance.

Important Points to Remember

The risks that are insured are specifically enumerated in the travel insurance policy. In most cases there is a maximum coverage amount per incident and in total. The policy also provides for circumstances that mitigate or totally exonerate from any liability. More importantly, most insurers already have an "insurance package".

Pay attention to the coverage and if you find it unacceptable, request for modification. This does not necessarily have to cost you additional money. On the latter however, all you can do is be 100% honest about the same or risk the insurer voiding the claim for failure to disclose material facts.

Types of Coverage

Accident Coverage: This covers any unforeseen event that occurs and causes injury, death, and damage to property. In some cases disability is also included.

Delayed Baggage Coverage: This is to allow the individual to replace essential items that are delayed but not lost.

Lost Baggage: Anybody who has travelled with any baggage would know that any carrier will only pay a maximum amount for lost personal effects. Well, if you think that is awfully low, then you need insurance to answer for the difference.

Rescheduling Coverage: This covers an instance when the connecting transportation was missed because the carrier did not follow the schedule for departure and/or arrival. This is especially expensive in case of air transportation, and is not only limited to the reimbursement of the plane ticket but necessary expenses incurred because of the reschedule (i.e. hotel accommodation, food, etc.).

Medical Coverage: This involves several things including ambulance fee, emergency room fee, hospitalization fee, necessary procedures, and others. In most cases, this has separate limits for accident related and sickness related expenses.

Overseas funeral/repatriation of remains: Should the insured pass away unexpectedly for any reason, his remains will be sent back to his homeland. This coverage pays for the expenses incurred in such arrangements. But, bear in mind that this is a lot more expensive than you think, especially if cremation is not an option, because the casket must be air tight and must meet airline and health standards.
