We have been coming back to to Maui now for the better part of 20 years and made a decision to give a brand-new resort, the Honua Kai Resort, a crack. We did some examination and booked our 2BR Ocean view villa from the highly proficient Maui Resort Realty group (more about them later).

Honestly, our opening impression of Honua Kai Resort was not the very best: we were not particularly familiar with the resort's North Kaanapali beach front area and when we drove up to the porte cochere outside the lobby, I felt underwhelmed by the pretty uninteresting resort access as well as surrounding landscaping. We were quickly ushered in by the administration agent and entered the lobby for summary of the . Upon entering the resort my uneasiness dissolved; the lobby area and courtyard were a few of the most aesthetically pleasing resort focus points I had seen throughout my years going over to Hawaii.

With a sense of expectancy we followed the representative up to our unit. The villa was contemporary but preserved a very Hawaiian feel and I could not discover any sort of flaw. The views were excellent; the ocean off in the distance with the swimming pool areas in the foreground. The young man showed us around the condo and did a great job making us feel more comfortable, having us know to contact him at any time if we necessitated assistance.

I recall seeing someplace that the name Honua Kai is Hawaiian for Land and Sea; after taking a stroll on this large, coastline front property (38 acres) I appreciated that the resort's name was wisely selected. Sizeable swaths of green yard, knolls and beach gave a feeling of openness to the resort rare in many common Hawaiian beachfront hotels.

Amenities:

I will primarily focus on which functions of the property my family had fun with the most:

Mom enjoyed the multiple health and fitness facilities located in both the Konea and Hokulani towers. She loved having her early morning workout routine before beginning the day.
I enjoyed extensive swimming pool features, which most likely covered at the very least 3 or 4 acres sandwiched by the beach and hotel. I loved alternating between going swimming and body boarding in the sea, showering off and swimming in the swimming pool or unwinding in the Jacuzzi tub.
The kids truly appreciated getting goodies from the Aina market place, swimming pool spots, water slides and, of course, having the ability to make friends with additional kids their ages (we went at the time of Spring Break).
A couple of extra insights:

The Honua Kai Resort property has every thing for everybody and IMHO was an absolutely great holiday experience.

There is a remarkable walking path in front of Honua Kai Hotel that takes you to the famous Blackrock point in front of the Sheraton hotel and back past the Royal Lahaina resort as well as Westin Kaanapali Sea resort. I truly enjoyed the chance to experience the North side of Black rock; while a little quieter, it was in many ways a much more impressive setting at that point the South Kaanapali beach location. Snorkeling is fantastic in front of the resort-- but, be careful, I would certainly suggest getting in the water 75 yards to the south of the resort to avoid the coral.

Pros

Family friendly
Villas are newly built and beautifully appointed
Beautiful grounds, pool areas as well as relaxed setting
Management company was very responsive regarding the few issues we had in the villa (some appliance quick fix concerns)
Friendly staff

Cons

Market was excellent yet expensive for what they offered
The area behind hotel is not that attractive-- the hotel is across the street from a transportation center (although can't complain regarding the views of West Maui Mountains)
I would certainly have liked to see the spa open-- the Honua Kai resort and spa is the official title and supposedly it will open in the near future.
Overall impression:

Despite a couple of small detracting issues, the Honua Kai Resort challenges the Marriott's Maui Ocean club for very best hotel amenities, and rooms are in a class on their own.
I would highly advise using Mauiresortrealty.com for booking the Honua Kai-- their rates are a lot better compared to the ones offered directly from the resort and their service was exceptional from starting to end.
