What a cute name that Google have come up with for their latest algorithm updates. Cute in the names but the impact itself is something many SEO lovers will come to hate. The changes are massive and it many sites were punished for foul play. With that said, many SEO experts went out of business and while some managed to adapt and stay alive.

The changes were so harsh that many 'traditional' SEO techniques were made useless. It became so serious that there were actual rumors about the 'Death of SEO' flying all over the internet. However, this is very far from the truth. SEO is not dead and certainly one could still get backlinks and optimize their site for a good ranking. The only problem is, it isn't going to be as easy as it was before.

The trick here is to treat backlinks not as a shortcut to higher rank but to actually try to get 'legitimate' backlinks that is actually valuable to your site.

The good news is, some marketers have identified a few good sources of backlinks that still work.

Guest blogging

Guest blogging is one of the best ways to get backlinks back to your own website. Sure it takes a lot of time to do a guest blog as it would mean that you will need to prepare a good blog post in order to be accepted, but the link will be a lot more meaningful to you, to the search engines as well as to your readers.

You are usually allowed up to two links on your guest blog. If you use these links correctly you will be able to get some good backlinks off your Guest Blogging, and you will find that these links are quite effective in getting non search engine visitors as well.

The key to guest blogging is that you need to find the right blog. When you are posting on a good blog with decent traffic and already have a good search engine ranking, you will get a good 'score' in Google's eyes. The next key to guest blogging is to be consistent with your content's quality.

Your blog content will only be considered by the publisher if it is of high value and if it has some very good points. Therefore, never try to cut down on your post's quality. Instead go for a very good post with really helpful information. This way, your post will be a guaranteed winner and site owners will not hesitate to share your post on their blog thus giving you a good reputation, backlinks and even quality and targeted traffic.

One thing to remember about backlinks is that you need to be consistent, and you need to keep doing it until you have a sizable number of post and back links. Even when you do have a huge collection of guest posting, you do not stop there because as SEO is a number's game, which means that you need keep at it as much as you can. Just remember to post in different blogs so that not all your guest post comes for a few blogs to make it look natural to the search engines.

Article Submission is a very ancient way to get backlinks back to your site. The way to do it now is to make sure that your article is very well-written and only submit one article for directory. That way, you can get traffic from the article directories, and that your article stands a chance to get republished.

Make sure that your article is unique and has a lot of good value on it. Gone are the days where you are required to write only 500 words. It is better to include more contents now than just a 'teaser' find of article. Not only will you be rewarded by the search engines, your readers will love you as well.



Blog commenting

One of the ways to get backlinks to your site that still works is to post on blogs.

However, you are advised not to spam for these kinds of links because these links are considered very easy to acquire hence their value in itself is quite low.

Therefore, you will only need a moderate amount of links that comes from blog commenting and make sure that your comments are indeed a constructive comment or a suggestion to the blog poster.

The trick here is to actually leave valuable comments that will not get deleted. Never spam because it will never work and it will only get your site penalized by the search engines.



Forum Marketing

Another great place to get backlinks are via forums. This is because you can defeat two birds with a single stone. When you leave a feedback on a forum, you get targeted visitors from the forum itself, and you will also get a backlink from a reputable forum as well. Again make sure your posts are not those 1 or 2 line spam posts.

If your post is deemed as a 'spam' your post will get deleted faster than you can say 'wait...'. The worst part is that you stand a chance to get your account banned as well, and that is a very bad thing to happen to your account if you are depending on your account to get you the backlinks.

It's good to mix some do follow, and no follow links. Hence do not be too worried if about this when you are getting your backlinks. The important thing is to be sure that your website is indeed looking natural not only to the search engine's watchful eyes, but to the human eyes as well.



Short reports.

Lastly, you can also write short reports and get backlinks from it. How will an eBook contribute to a backlink you asked? Well, many people do not know that the links inside an ebooks gets indexed as well by the search engines.

Hence, write some short reports and submit it to sites like docstoc or pdfcast that will get your eBook's link indexed by the search engine. Remember to always diversify so that your links looks natural.
