A Primer on Dog Training

Dog training, whichever process you go about it, can be a daunting task that requires always the proper behavior from your canine friend. The dog needs to have the proper state of mind before it can follow your cues. In order to achieve this, the dog should always have regular exercise. Regular exercise releases pent up energy, which in turn calms your dog and makes it more susceptible to dog training, or even for other types of human-dog interaction.

There are many ways to exercise your dog. You can play fetch or do regular walks with it. It is always best to do at least these two types of exercises in order to have a physically fit and happy dog.

There are some dog owners who express concerns about their dogs' behavior while walking. Some tend to pull on the leash or lunge on other dogs. Luckily, you can get rid these particular problems by doing the following:

1. Be the pack leader

Dogs are pack animals by instinct. To make sure that the walk is stress-free, your dog should see you as the pack leader. A pack leader should look confident and assertive. To establish yourself, stand up straight, and set your shoulders back. Every move should appear as if there's always a purpose behind it.

2. Put the dog on short leash

Keeping the leash short can help better establish communication with your dog. This way, the slightest movement of your wrist easily tells your dog what you have in mind, be it to stop or move in another direction. More importantly, a snap at the leash enables you to correct problematic behavior immediately. It's also important to always maintain the looseness of the leash.

3. Take a rest, smell the grass, interact with other dogs and other people

Walking should be a pleasurable experience for your dog. So go to places that can provide a lot of visual stimulation. Go to parks where there's lots of people and even other dogs. Stop at a bench where you and the dog can bask in the beautiful surroundings. If you happen to pass by someone you know, stop and talk with that person, and allow him or her to interact with your dog. It's even better if there are other dogs to interact with.

Of course, it goes without saying that you yourself should interact with your dog. So give it a pat or a rub down every once in a while. Talk to it whenever you can. Do all these and your dog will always be a happy camper.

4. Place the collar at the upper neck

Putting the collar at the upper neck prevents the dog from controlling you. The lower part of the neck is where most of the dog's pulling power comes from (if you look at dog sleds, the harness is always positioned at the lower part of the neck). The upper portion is the sensitive part, and if you keep the collar there, the dog is more likely to follow your cue.

5. Walk regularly

When you walk your dog frequently, a connection, or a bond, is established. When proper behavior is reinforced and problematic ones are corrected, good habits are formed. And when this occurs, every walk is a satisfying experience. Dog training, if done frequently and without too much pressure on the dog, can make your dog happy in the long run.
