What is Glaucoma? Glaucoma is an eye problem or a disease that is commonly associated with the increase in pressure coming from fluids inside one's body. This fluid pressure is responsible for the damages that happen in one's optic nerves. Consequently, this will lead to loss of vision and then eventually, to blindness.

Marijuana is shown to lower the IOP or the intraocular pressure with people who are suffering from glaucoma. This experiment was conducted in 1970. A few years later, a study was again conducted to determine whether it is the marijuana or the drugs from marijuana that is what's effective as a glaucoma treatment.

From this study, it was found out that certain things derived from marijuana that is taken orally, through smoking, or intravenously, lowered one's IOP level. But this result is not the same when it is simply applied to one's eye.

Indeed, there are marijuana benefits for glaucoma. However the same studies show that the drugs that are already sold on the market is more effective than any of the components of marijuana. Also there were noted side effects from the use of marijuana that make the use of it not worth taking the risk. This is especially true since there is a more effective medicine to treat glaucoma that is available in the market. Some of these side effects are increase in one's heart rate and decrease in one's blood pressure.

The above explanation makes the marijuana benefits for glaucoma not as helpful and vital as some people would hope. It is worthy to note that the needed dosage of marijuana that will produce the benefit mentioned above will require a person to constantly inhale marijuana. This has to be done every three hours. And the good effect of this will last for a short term.

Given the side effects as mentioned above, from the long term use of marijuana, it can be said that this is not a better choice than the one already made available in pharmacies. In fact, it is not at all a good choice.

At present, marijuana is made part of the list of drugs that are potentially and easily abused and has not much proven medical or therapeutic application.

Glaucoma is not an untreatable disease. In fact, it can be treated through medication and also surgery. These are FDA approved drugs and procedure. There is no call for further experimentations or tests to see if marijuana can be a good supplement. For those who are hoping that there be something more to marijuana than its addictive substance, today is not the day to have their hopes realized as the marijuana benefits for glaucoma is not enough to make it okay to smoke it.
