Another characteristic that sets impressionist art apart is the painting surface. Classical painters will take advantage of the thin paint films. This is how they create and manipulate effects. Impressionism on the other hand, uses an opaque painting surface.

A strange habit and strategy of impressionist artist is that they usually work in the evening. It is probably because this is the time they can create shadowy effects as realistically as possible.

Focus on the Outdoors and Natural Light

The biggest emphasis in impressionist art is natural lighting. Artists focus on the reflection of colors. They also pay a lot of attention to the reflection from one object to another.

Impressionism uses the outdoors as a usual background. Blue skies with the natural light reflecting on objects creating shadows are typical of an impressionist painting. The overall effect is vibrant and fresh representation.
