Skateboarding Was No Longer a Hobby but a Lifestyle

I was eight when I first saw my big brother Alex doing his thing in a half pipe. Tricks and stuff in skateboarding while our worried mom shouts behind the window for him to stop, because mom said that he will break a bone or two if he will not. Our mother was worried and perhaps it was expected as what any mothers would feel. Yet, there was nothing she could do since our father allowed my brother to buy one skateboard off his savings from his school allowance. Perhaps our father saw the determination, discipline and joy of my brother Alex as he was learning how to balance himself and repeating it over and over whenever he fell.

As Alex puts it, those who want to learn how to skateboard should not be afraid to fall repeatedly until you finally got it. I could say that my brother influenced me to learn skateboarding too. Besides, it was cool seeing him and his friends work the miniramp and the rails and it was simply crazy and awesome. So when I turned a year older, I learned how to balance myself using my brother's skateboard. This time, it was my turn to regularly hear my name, "Engel! Be careful!" I heard my mom would often say.

Alex was sort of my mentor and he allowed me to use his very first deck that he bought for less than 10 dollars and couple of more dollars for the wheels. It was his gift for my 9th birthday and I clearly remembered him saying, "Engel, don't be afraid to fall." It became my prized possession and the old deck with scratches and chips also witnessed how I bravely tried the ramp off the park a couple of blocks away from our school. I started mastering my balancing skills on a flat and smooth surface and later on, I worked my skills in low Halfpipesand rails. When I turned 16, I already have a collection of decks from Plan B, Element, Powell, Birdhouse and Blitz, and Habitat. My collection of trucks includes Grindking, Krux and Navigator but I also have my eye on Thunder and Fury. Aside from collecting decks and trucks, I have a couple of favorite skateboarding shoes like Fallen, Globe and Vans to complete the looks.

Now, skateboarding no longer was a hobby and I could say that it grew on me since it became my lifestyle. It also influenced how I deal with challenges like constantly falling and getting up again to try and try until you got it right. Just like how my brother and his team competed and won in a couple of skateboarding competitions in Sydney, Perth and other cities, I also want to win some. So, me and my buddies spend a couple of hours each week on a Quarter Pipeand also find time to try skate parks around Adelaide like Modbury, Unley, Sixth Sense, The City and Golden Grove. It will not be too long before people cheer my name, "Engel! Engel!" during skateboarding meets.
