14 Fantastic Tips for Working at Home

Great Tips for Working at Home and Staying Productive

Working at home (in your very own company) has remarkable benefits - no long commute in the heavy traffic, no need to ask consent to go the Dentist or to leave early to collect the children from school. But it could likewise bring a whole draft of troubles too - specifically if you are new to working at home. Losing the framework offered by a workplace setting could be extremely unsettling for some. Troubles might include things like, Never Actually Switching Off! Or other individuals not appreciating your time. Or simply not getting organised enough to in fact get anything done !!

So, when working at home, how do we remain productive - and keep a work-life balance?

I have put together a list of tips for working at home that I have actually discovered practical. (By the way, I have actually worked from home now for over 11 years - and I wouldn't go back to an office for anything! Nonetheless I still find these pointers very useful to remind myself exactly what I should be doing periodically!).

Tips for Working at Home: 1. Define your Work Space.

You need to have a workplace - which isn't sitting on the sofa in front of the TELEVISION! If you do not have a separate study (which is the perfect option) then try setting yourself up with a workdesk in the spare bed room or dining space. You need a space where you could shut the door and feel like you are 'at work' and as a result feel like you have 'finished work' when you move out of that area at the end of your day. Psychologically this is essential as it alters your state of mind from "in the house" to "at work". Find out how to FOCUS. Being able to shut the door on your different area is important - if the door is open it could indicate to your household that you are available to chat (or play!).

Wherever your work space is, see to it you keep it tidy - the old saying about a tidy work desk equalling a neat mind is true! The tidier and even more organised your workspace, the more efficient you will be. Likewise, make sure you have the devices you need - in particular ensure you have a comfortable chair with back support.

Tips for Working at Home: 2. Set Ground Rules with Those Around You.

Set your working hours (see idea 4) and ensure that your friends and family are aware of this and appreciate it. You are NOT readily available for coffee, for long lunches or for play! Your family and friends probably wouldn't interrupt you at a workplace with concerns that could easily wait till you get home - however if home is your workplace they could not show the same restraint. A great deal of family and friends will additionally think that as you work from home you are able to stop for coffee or a long lunch at a moments notice! Make sure that everyone comprehends that disruptions are for urgent matters only.

Tips for Working at Home: 3. Prepare for Work - Physically and Mentally.

Have breakfast, shower and get dressed. You do not need to wear a suit - but don't stay in your pyjamas! Getting dressed first thing in the morning prepares you for work - it gets your frame of mind in the right place.

Don't turn the laptop on just to check e-mails as you walk past the study first thing in the early morning (I am guilty of this one!) All of a sudden you realize it's lunchtime and you are still in your PJs with a stinking headache because you haven't had breakfast (not to mention a shower!).

Make sure you are in the right mind set for the day. Start the day effectively.

Tips for Working at Home: 4. Set Regular Hours - and Stick to Them.

A benefit of working at home is that you don't have to work 9-5 if you don't want to. I often work from 9.30-3.00 (with a break for lunch) and then 7.30-8.30 at night (after my Son is in bed). Think of what works for you. You may need to work early mornings or evenings to fit around your family life or to interact with associates in other timezones.

Whatever hours you choose - stay with them! (You are enabled some leeway - however don't let work run your life).

I think this is among the hardest 'rules' when working from home - it is so simple to in fact never ever turn off. But a healthy work-life balance is very important - even if you do work at home.

Tips for Working at Home: 5. Don't think you need an Immaculate House!

Do not invest even more time on housework than on working! A little light household chores in your 'lunch hour' is appropriate, as is popping the odd load of cleaning on, but really, when you are at work, you are at work - even if you are working at home. If you could afford to get a cleaner and you would have one if you were working a 'proper job' in an office - still get one. Please don't think you need to be Superwoman (or Superman) and do it all yourself because other individuals think you have lots more time because you work from home !!

If you take your work seriously, particularly if you have simply begun a new company at home, then you should put the hours into your work - not into
cleaning your house!! Schedule non-work time for household tasks and get the rest of the household to do their share. It is important that you do not take on every house task simply since you work from home - those around you should appreciate the reality that although you are at home you have serious work to do throughout your scheduled hours.

Tips for Working at Home: 6. Minimize Distractions.

If your work allows- TURN OFF the telephone so that you can concentrate and get on without diversion. Only inspect your e-mail at certain times of the day. It is so simple to get distracted by emails that you think need to respond to IMMEDIATELY! If you do this, you will never get any tasks finished!

TURN OFF your Skype, FaceBook, Twitter etc while you are working. Check your IM at particular times and only go on FaceBook in your break times. I understand that working from home can be lonely so using Social Media can feel like your lifeline to the outdoors - however this could rapidly take over your day and destroy your productivity.

Tips for Working at Home: 7. Make a Daily TO DO List.

Making lists can actually help you to concentrate and quit you hesitating - which for some reason we seem to do even more of when we are sat in your home on our very own !! I do a weekly list of tasks then break that down into everyday tasks. I make use of the Steven Covey strategy to Time Management as much as feasible and the essential thing for me is to focus on my BIG ROCKS. Don't just choose the easy jobs - invest quality time on your Big Rocks and your venture will fly!

If you really do battle to focus (even with a to-do list) try preparing exactly what you are going to do each hour which needs to help you remain effective!

Tips for Working at Home: 8. Produce Small Deadlines.

This follows on from suggestion 7 - and can likewise help quit the dreadful procrastination! When you begin the day it appears like you have great deals of time and it can be easy to obtain sidetracked by the TV or the Telephone. Set targets for finishing pieces of work - e.g. "I will complete writing this blog by 11am". "I will finish this marketing activity by 1.00". This helps to separate your day and keep you concentrated on the task.

Tips for Working at Home: 9. Don't Just Take a Day Off since things get difficult!

Do not just take a day off due to the fact that you don't fancy working today !! If you are having a hard day - persevere - do some work anyway! If you are sick, be sick - take a proper day of rest to get better. If you plan a holiday day off that's fine - but don't just choose you cannot be troubled to work today - that is a slippery slope to go down when all of a sudden you never attain anything!

Tips for Working at Home: 10. Take Scheduled Breaks.

There are different ways to do this - depending on your working style. However provide yourself breaks. Some people discover it handy to take a 15 min break for every hour worked. Or perhaps you would like to take a 15 minute break two times a day. In addition to small breaks take an appropriate lunch break. Consume something healthy - AWAY FROM YOUR DESK! Leave your home and get some fresh air - it will really make you a lot more effective when you get back to your desk. Working without breaks will simply result in 'diminishing returns'. You think you are working really hard - however the results just aren't that terrific !!

Tips for Working at Home: 11. Finish when you Finish.

Know when to quit working! Just since you are working at home doesn't suggest that you need to be working ALL THE TIME that you are at home! Leave work at the end of the day.

Susan Seaburg (Field Development Manager for Hewlett Packard) offers her input on working at home in an interview with Santa Clara University:.

"The good news is that now you can work anywhere - the bad news is that now you can work anywhere."

A lot of individuals go home to get far from work - you do not have that choice. So be careful that you still preserve a great work-life balance.

Tips for Working at Home: 12. Watch your Mood.

Everything you hear will influence your mood - or sidetrack you from task. Personally I dislike working in silence so if I truly should concentrate I put on some non-intrusive music simply to develop background noise! (My husband is the opposite - he has to work in full silence so we make use of different rooms if he is working at home too!) If I am not needing to focus too hard I pay attention to educational audios - as I a member of the Empower Network Inner Circle I have access to an entire variety of recordings by individuals at the very top of web marketing - so I listen to those every day. These could also be fantastic to raise your state of mind if you are feeling a bit low or unfocussed. Discover exactly what works for you and ensure you surround yourself with things that will offer you the very best state of mind for whatever you're doing.

Tips for Working at Home: 13. Seek out chances to interact with various other humans!

If you know you can won't be too sidetracked, go and work in a cafe, hotel or library sometimes as this could simply offer you a change from being at home. Most cafes have free wifi these days if you should be on the internet.

Attend some training courses or networking events to preserve some human contact - and possibly pick up some business too!

Skype or Facebook chat rooms could also be a good way to connect with the outside world. I use these methods a lot as my team and associates are all over the World. However as discussed previously, do not get trapped to spending hours a day talking on line and not getting anything else done.

Make the odd telephone call too - do not just make use of email. It is good for your peace of mind to actually talk to someone once in a while!

And Last But Not Least -

Tips for Working at Home: 14. Be GRATEFUL !!

Be grateful that you CAN work at home. That you do not need to do the awful commute, that you could be at home when the kids get in from school, that you aren't stuck in a windowless workplace or shared cubicle !! Above all, BE PRODUCTIVE so you could KEEP working at home!
