The choosing of the godparents is a vital decision for the parents of the child. They will be responsible for helping with the child's upbringing and personal development. Such obligations are not to be taken lightly and even in today's more secular society the role is still very pivotal. It may not carry the religious overtones it once had but it still contains all the accountabilities.
The idea behind the ceremony and its meaning can also vary depending on which denomination of Christianity the candidate is being introduced to. Some experts believe the rite is the equivalent to the Jewish initiation of circumcision and shows a conversion to Christianity. Some believe it is a cleansing from original sin and the water used by the priest signifies this. But all the specialists agree about its momentousness.
