Doing nothing when we know things are supposed to be getting done is a nasty habit we have all fallen pray to. There have been times in which I have felt besieged when I glanced at a task that laid in front of me, thinking it was too big or too complicated. This frequently led to me leaving it for another day and lazing around for a long while instead.

I am certain you are able to relate to having to take action to achieve a personal goal or having to do something for you school or work and just feeling totally unable or unwilling to overcome laziness and just push through it.

And as me, you have surely told yourself that the reason why you you are just not able to overcome laziness is because you don't have sufficient will power to do so. This is absolutely false.

There is a limit to how much we can get ourselves to do through our mere will power. No matter how much will power you really posses, there will be times in which it will just not be enough to overcome laziness by itself.

So how can you overcome laziness if not through will power?

Human beings are motivated to act either to AVOID PAIN or to GAIN PLEASURE.

This are the two most powerful, basic human desires. The famous metaphor of the carrot and the stick plays a huge role in our path to overcome procrastination. As human beings we are always either running AWAY from something we don't want to be, have or experience or we are running TOWARDS something we DO want.

Grasping the idea of this two forces is key for you to overcome laziness and get into action mode. They are the base of the 4 effective steps I personally use to overcome procrastination when I feel it starting to get the best of me.

The 4 Powerful Steps to Overcome Laziness:

Step 1
Question yourself:
What am I trying to avoid?
What is that I am certain I DON'T want ?
Paint a clear image in your brain of the aftermath of not taking action.

Step 2
Question yourself:
What DO I want?
What will I gain if I DO take action?
WHY do I want it?
Paint a clear image of the objective you are after and of how you will feel when you finally achieve it.

Step 3
Question yourself:
What's the next step that I can take?
Not every step along the way, but the SINGLE next step.
It can be something as simple as calling one of your clients, putting on your tennis shoes or closing Facebook and opening Wikipedia.
The most important aspect here is MOMENTUM. Once you start doing something momentum will do the rest.

Step 4
Rinse and repeat.

Going through and remembering these 4 effective steps will take you a long way into being able to overcome Procrastination.

Step 3 is extremely crucial. Instead of having to constantly push yourself, it is by far more effective to have a COMPELLING VISION so inspiring and vivid it actually PULLS you to overcome procrastination.

Be sure to spend some time into clearly defining for yourself what you are after and be certain the image of it motivates you to do your absolute best. If it does not, find a more compelling why to fuel your actions until you do.

You will find this to be an incredibly powerful exercise, not just to overcome procrastination, but to enhance your life as a whole.
