When Reinforcing Concrete

Article Category: Advice

Author Name: Dennis Graziano

The first thing that comes to mind when reinforcing concrete is the idea that concrete, even if considered a very strong material that can hold up under pressure, will eventually fail as tension forces affect it. Unreinforced concrete may handle a lot of weight, but it can also become brittle at the same time.

The construction industry relies on reinforced concrete as an effective technique as support to the construction of various building structures. Reinforced concrete is used in constructing walls, frames, slabs, foundations, beams, columns, and many more.

How It Works

Concrete alone is easily brittle, and it breaks easily due to the stress. Time and outdoor weather can cause concrete to crumble as well. This makes traditional concrete an impractical idea when used in structures designed to stand up against heavy weight, much less last for a long time. This is where reinforced concrete comes in, since it has an improved ability to hold more weight than its traditional counterpart. And it does not wear down easily while at it. Most commercial structures these days adapt reinforced concrete systems to stand up against time, weather and whatever punishment comes their way.

Reinforced concrete is designed to counteract concrete's general ductility and low tensile strength features through reinforcement. It automatically makes for ductility and higher tensile strength. It utilizes steel reinforcing bars (though not necessarily in some cases) that are passively embedded to the concrete. Schemes designed for reinforcing concrete are aimed at standing up against tensile strength that might cause cracks anywhere on the concrete, or general structural failure.

Modern reinforced concrete systems may also contain various reinforcing materials like polymers, steel, or even alternate composite materials. Aside from that, certain conditions may render the concrete permanently stressed just to improve the final structure. This is achieved by pre and post tensioning.

The reinforcement needs to achieve certain properties to promote ductility and durability, properties such as having high relative strength, good bonding to the concrete, despite the presence of other factors such as moisture and pH, and ist capacity to tolerate tensile strain. Thermal compatibility also has to be factored in; such property must not react to changing temperatures causing unhealthy stress. Reinforced concrete must also be durable enough in the overall concrete environment, especially in the face of sustained stress and corrosion.
Key Characteristics
The following characteristics mold reinforced concrete into achieving its special properties:

Concrete's coefficients in thermal expansion are just similar to the properties of steel. It eliminates the internal stress due to the differences that defined thermal expansion and contraction.

As the cement paste begins to harden, it will now conform to the steel surface's details, allowing stress to transmit between materials with impressive efficiency. Steel bars are usually corrugated or roughened to improve the bond further of both steel and concrete.

The designs and implementation of efficient floor systems are crucial in the creation of optimal building structures. Small design changes in such floor systems can easily create significant impacts on various construction aspects, such as construction schedules, material and operating costs, ultimate strength, the intended occupancy levels, and the building's intended uses. Reinforcing concrete concept is also a critical phase as well since the construction of modern structures would not be possible without it.
