The main difference between these perfume types is in the concentration of fragrance oil contained in these products.

Colognes are among the weakest types of fragrances with 3 to 8 percent oils and high alcohol content. Other fragrance products include body splashes and aftershaves for men, containing only minute amounts of fragrance oils.

Remember, the smaller the concentration of perfume oils, the quicker it wears off. So while extracts are expensive, you might be better off with a tiny bottle of perfume than a big spray bottle of cologne.

Perfume Notes

Perfumes are definitely in a different league from their weaker versions. They are usually defined as having three different notes of fragrance mixed together in perfect harmony to form a distinct, pleasant scent (known as bouquet).

The three notes are the top, middle, and base notes of the perfume. Top notes are the scent which hits the nose initially after you apply the fragrance, while the middle notes are actually its main scent. Base notes, meanwhile, are rich scents which emerge after about 30 minutes of wearing the scent.

These are the common fragrance types you'll find on different perfumes and fragrance products-a unique blend from different oils to create a lasting impression on the wearer.

Floral bouquets are perhaps the most well-known type in the perfume world for women. As the name indicates, these fragrances contain scent oils from flowers-either a single variety or a select collection of varieties.

Other popular bouquet types for women include oriental, which uses the scent of spices like clove and vanilla, and chypre which is identified by a blend of citrus and earthy scents.

Meanwhile, popular bouquets for men's perfumes include the fougere bouquet which consists of strong oak and mossy scents, and the musky wood bouquet. Neutral bouquets include the cool green bouquet which uses outdoor scents like pine and the clean-smelling oceanic bouquet.
