It does seem that business runs to a large degree on networking and how well you do it. Building a thriving network of business contacts and business relationships is how you build a successful business for yourself. This is really nothing new at all, and you have some knowledge of networking, most likely. You've probably been reading all sorts of tips and tricks about how to be a better at it. Networking best practices are smart to learn so you'll minimize mistakes and be more effective.

Other people really do respond better when they are greeted with something simple like a smile. You may not know this, but marketing research shows there's a difference between being on the phone with and without that smile. And just accept the fact that not everybody will respond to you in the way you want. The mistake many people make with rejection in business is they take it personally and you cannot do that. All you can do is be friendly and move on to other people and never let it get you down. Mining people you don't know for the people they know is a mistake because it's one thing to be nice to a receptionist when you do cold calling. You can see how incredibly dumb this approach is even if sometimes you do encounter it. Word does get around about stupid things like this, and your name will be at the top of the list and you can kiss your networking goodbye. But, you never know because you can try this and get first hand experience with total and complete rejection.

When making meeting arrangements, then stick with the place that you both agreed upon. If the place that you made arrangements for is not available once you get there, then advise the other person of what is happening. Then you can come up with other arrangements at that time. Or you can meet there anyway and then move to another place that is in that same neighborhood. Do not assume that things have changed and not tell your contact what is going on. This is not polite and this person will not to meet with you in the future. Networking is too powerful to ignore or fail to do, and remember you can still do it online, too. And you must learn how to work around mistakes so you don't make them. Don't worry-if you keep working and learning you'll get to where you want to go.
