For many years the knowledge of people about dolls is quite limited. For most people, fashion dolls are just mere toys representing an adult human body. For others, they are just models of designer clothes who pose if front of different people. For children, though, dolls go a lot deeper than mere toys.

Before fashion dolls became popular, there were different kinds of dolls accessible in different cultures. The first dolls were made of clay and shaped as an adult woman. They were found in tombs of children in ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Although clay is said to be the first material that made out dolls, wood was the first one to be used to make dolls that could be sold. The body and the head of the dolls were carefully crafted by professionals and the face was directly painted to the wood itself.

At first, wooden dolls were the first fashion dolls of young children. Then, in around 1800, a mixture of plastic, paper, plaster, and other materials were used as an alternative to wood materials to make dolls. The mixture was later known as composition mixture.

For many years several materials behind fashion dolls were developed and different types of dolls were made. Blythe dolls' heads and torsos were made of hard and durable plastic. Fashion dolls were not just meant to be models and toys. Their deeper purpose is to prepare a young girl for her adulthood. This is a reason why dolls were designed and copied from the bodies of adult women. In ancient times, children were viewed as small and incomplete adults who had so much to learn before facing all the responsibilities of older people. Dolls and accessories teach young girls of what adult life is like. A girl who is attached to her doll grows up in a different way. Some girls consider their dolls as personal guides while growing up.

Fashion dolls' purposes were not just for aesthetic value and for portrayal of adulthood. Some dolls were made to be companions for some people. This is why some of them are given their own names and identity, which is why dolls shouldn't be thrown out when the girl gets older.

As women look back to their past, most of them who had owned a doll would easily remember their youth with their trusted companion. Dolls seem to be alive in some sort because the mere appearance of them brings back old memories of childhood. These memories are priceless and even the most expensive fashion dolls are not able to top them.
