We often hear people talk about born leaders. It is true that some people's personalities are better-suited for leading people. It takes education, experience and knowledge to become an effective leader.

Gaining Knowledge of the Field
The best leaders are those who have extensive knowledge of the fields in which they work. For example, a leader in a healthcare environment needs to have knowledge about healthcare. When managers are brought in from a different field, the employees do not respond well to their lack of experience.

A manager can eventually gain the information and the experience needed to become an effective leader in any environment. Ideally, he or she will have at least some expertise before attempting to become a leader in a specific field.

Learning to Communicate Effectively
The definition of leadership varies according to the source. Some sources define a process in which one person has the influence or ability to enlist the aid and support of another in accomplishing a task. Others simply define leaders as people who guide or direct others; someone who is followed.

In all of the different definitions, the ability to communicate is mentioned. The ability to communicate "effectively" is a skill that good leaders strive to perfect. People can certainly guide or direct others without having good communication skills but those people are not usually "good" or effective leaders.

In a recent ceremony for new inductees into a college honor's society, a dean remarked that business owners had told him that if the professors could just teach the students how to write, everything else would come with experience. This shows how important written communication is in the business world.
