Why We Need Less Gun Control

What happened in Sandy Hook Elementary School was beyond evil. But it really has little to do with the 2nd amendment and with whether or not people should be allowed to keep and carry guns than on who should be allowed to keep and carry guns. Guns aren't horrible in and of themselves. It is those who use the guns to cause harm who are evil and horrible and, ultimately, should be the ones controlled. The government should not be trying to encroach on our 2nd amendment rights and putting bans on certain kinds of firearms. Why, you ask?
• It violates the2nd amendment.
Wear your "I support the 2nd amendment" shirt with abandon. There is nothing wrong with being pro-gun. There is, however, something wrong with imposing on a fundamental right that our nation's Founders bestowed upon us – and with good reason. Our 2nd amendment rights allow us to be the frontliners of our own security and protection. That is a job that not even the police or other law enforcement units can help us with. In fact, sometimes, it is even them that we need to be protected from.
• More people die from handguns than from rifles.
The government and gun control activists seek to ban assault rifles and high-powered firearms. Why? According to statistics, the percentage of people who were killed by a rifle in 2010 (as opposed to everyone else killed through murder) was not even 0.03%. More people die in a month from handguns than from mass shootings involving high-powered ammo in an entire year. And this is not because rifles are scarce. Since 2008, nearly half a million rifles have been sold in the USA. Banning rifles doesn't make sense.
• It is impossible to stop the illegal gun trade.
We all know that we shouldn't be handing out guns to criminals and psychopaths. And yet, somehow, these people are the ones who are able to keep, carry, and use guns. The illegal market for guns is, unfortunately, almost impossible to stop. In fact, the highest rates of gun-related violence occur in places where there are strict gun bans – places like Chicago, New York, and Detroit. Gun bans only serve to make the black market for guns a bigger and bigger business for organized crime. And these organizations don't do a background check on buyers. They will sell to terrorists and lawbreakers of every kind.
• We need the Guardian program.
It has to be said: if there had been an armed guard or any adult armed with a gun in Sandy Hook, so many young and innocent children and teachers would not have died. If at least 10% of teachers in a school were armed, a shooter would not get 10 feet without being shot dead. We don't need kids to be afraid of guns. We need them to know that guns can save their lives.
The 2nd amendment empowers us to protect ourselves and those we love from those who would use force and violence. We can pass all the gun control laws we think will make the world safer, but the truth is that evildoers have no respect for the law. If we truly wish to protect ourselves, we need to prepare for the worst. And, you have to agree, guns are one of the quickest and most effective ways to thwart a violent attack.
