All online businesses marketing and promote something, whether it's a service or a product, and while many avenues exist for doing that - forum marketing is one approach that works well even if not used by the majority. One of the keys to forum marketing success is finding where your market is, which forums, and then prepare to do business there. In order to do this, you have to look out for those forums that are closely related to your niche, so that you're able to target your prospects where they usually hang out. It all depends on your market, but do only give your time to forums where your market audience congregates in reasonably worthwhile numbers. It's only worth your time and work to pay attention to those forums where your audience visits. So for example, if you're promoting an ebook about weight loss, then you should only go for those forums that have members that are interested in losing weight, getting fit, getting back in shape, etc. You never know, a forum with a low membership, but highly targeted, often times turns out to be highly responsive to targeted marketing with a good product. Don't fall for the quantity over quality lure because a lot of times that just doesn't pay off. However, since we can only talk about generalities (we don't know your niche), then if your product has general appeal, then that is an understandable exception to the general rule. Good quality electronic devices, such as an iPod, have mass appeal, so that is the kind of exception we're talking about. That is the kind of thinking you need to do when you're preparing for marketing to forums.

Get in the habit of putting your primary keyword phrase in your post titles so they can more easily rank higher in the search engines. One clever approach is to make sure your threads are titled with the keywords you want to rank for, and then write a good post containing the keywords because these posts can get a high position in Google, for example. How about a page one ranking for a decent keyword/phrase in minutes? That's what we're talking ahout here. Once you do that, then you can get a lot of organic search engine traffic.

There are some huge no-no's in forums, and the practice of spamming posts with your links, or making a lot of 'thin' posts will possibly result in a ban. It's very easy, and common, for other members to report posts that are spamming, etc. If you're a spammer, then that's one thing, if you're not - then ignorance is generally not considered an excuse.
