Essential Baby Skin Care Routines

Article Category: Parenting

Author Name: Julie Ramos

Any parent that has a baby should understand as much as they can about baby skin care. Once you are educated about your baby's skin, and what can adversely affect it, you will handle things like diaper rash much more easily. Your pediatrician can guide you when it comes to any serious issues, but there are some simple steps you can follow to help your baby's skin stay as healthy as possible.

It is common for babies to get rashes and, for the most part, you don't need to be concerned when you see them. Diaper rash is by far the most common kind of rash and it happens when a baby's skin comes into contact with a wet diaper (the length of time isn't all that important). It doesn't matter how careful a parent is, this rash is difficult to avoid sometimes. The most popular treatment for diaper rash is washing your baby off with warm water and giving his skin some time in the fresh air.

If the rash doesn't let up or if it starts to get worse, you should make an appointment with your pediatrician. Most of the time, though, diaper rash goes away by itself.

Have you heard of the umbilical stump? It is something that you should be cautious about the first few weeks of your baby's life. Mothers understand that the umbilical cord is what kept to their baby alive and fed while in their tummy. For a short time, this stump will stay on your baby even after the umbilical cord has left. Be very careful with the stump! It is fragile and easy to damage. Clean it with rubbing alcohol several times a day, and other than this don't touch it. The umbilical stump is prone to infection, which is why it must be kept clean. As long as you keep it clean, and don't irritate it, the stump should be fine. If anything goes wrong, contact your pediatrician as soon as possible. As long as the umbilical stump is present, your job is to keep it clean and not worry about it. Your pediatrician can help you in case any difficulties arise.

When dressing your baby you want his or her clothing to be both loose fitting and comfortable. The best material in terms of baby clothing is usually cotton because this is a light material that is gentle to the touch of your baby's skin and allows air to circulate. Cotton works well because it can easily absorb sweat. There are, however, other natural or organic fibers that are available as well, though these are often more expensive than plain cotton. Don't dress your baby in clothing that is too tight either. The best thing that you can buy is clothing that is at least one size that is too big because babies grow quickly. Anything that might be too tight can cut off circulation and can cause your baby to sweat and that can make your baby both uncomfortable and more likely to develop a skin problem.

If you want to keep your baby to be both comfortable and healthy there are lots of different skin care guidelines that you can use. These are just a start--work with your pediatrician and do some research to find other things you can do. Babies are communicative and will tell you when something is uncomfortable so stay alert and watchful for signs that something needs to be changed or adjusted.

On a last note, remember that natural oils provide a very high quantity of essential fatty acids and vitamins, and are very safe. The rarest of all the natural oils is organic Argan oil, with the greatest Argan oil originating from Morocco. This awesome natural oil can take the place of multitude of your basic hydrating products, minus any threat of lasting harm to your baby's skin. Try a little and see why it's appreciated as "liquid gold."
