It is useful in the management of stress which is one of the main culprits in causing health problems. Music also allows you to effectively express bottled up feelings and is a safe outlet for negative emotions. All of which are required for maintaining good mental and emotional health.
It is common practice in both traditional and alternative medicine to use music therapy for certain illnesses . Anyone, young or old, can experience healing through music. Not only can it be used to treat social and communication problems but it effectively manages a person's pain as well. Even patients who are undergoing rehabilitation such as those who suffered from stroke and with disorders that affect the memory may show marked improvement and healing through music.
Music is also used to calm the mind and relax the body. In this way, you could release pent-up stress and encourage healing by allowing positive energy to circulate once more. During therapy, in order to fully achieve the benefits of healing through music, a treatment and interaction plan should be set with goals on what is to be accomplished after the session. The music should also appropriately match the person's needs and successfully address the area of his/her life that needs healing.
Music also helps in fostering feelings of hope, happiness, and peace. It connects us to our inner self and makes us more aware of our feelings and that of others. It also helps us manage and control our emotions better which in turn results in a healthier outlook in life. For some of experiencing healing through music made them closer to their spirituality and helped them see the world in a new and more positive perspective.

Make sure that music fits the purpose. Choose something that brings out the mood and response you are after.
