The koi is a large, tamed version of the common carp. It can reach up to the length of 3 feet, depending on its living conditions. They vary in colors and are sometimes covered with spots. The average lifespan of a koi fish is 15 to 20 years. Some can live to be 30 years old or more. Being quite similar to goldfish, they both have the same ancestor and can even mate together, however their offspring would turn out to be sterile. The koi is an omnivore and may consume eggs, lettuce, peas, watermelon, and other kinds of fish and their eggs.

This fish derives from Eastern Asia and is considered highly symbolic, especially with that of the Japanese and Chinese. Allegorical meanings of this fish were even derived from a Chinese legend called the Legend of the Dragon Gate, wherein the koi fish swam upstream, amidst the strong current of the waterfalls and other impediments to reach the top of the mountain. With its strong and dynamic life force, it is usually associated with success, longevity, prosperity, courage, ambition and perseverance.

Some helpful tips to keep in mind when taking care of koi fish include purchasing a good filter system for the pond. Without a filter, koi would poison themselves. Koi discharges ammonia through its gills and in its excrement. In the absence of a filter, the concentration of ammonia will amplify in the water and the pond will sooner or later become toxic. Feeding the fish is also important to ensure that they receive proper nourishment. What to feed koi differ depending on what season it is and what climate there is. During summer time, the fish require high protein food in order to help them grow. On the other hand, during winter time when the temperature drops below 52� F, avoid feeding the koi as their metabolism slackens when the climate is cold, causing some food to stay in their system, undigested. During spring and fall, it is also recommended to feed the koi wheat germ-based fish food as this allows easier digestion for the koi.

These magnificent creatures are truly one of a kind. When planning to raise koi fish, knowing the basics is a must in order to allow more years of enjoying them as pets.
