Causes and Symptoms of Anxiety Disorders

There are many types of anxiety disorders, with symptoms ranging from mild to severe. Anxiety disorders are characterized by a higher level of stress and anxiety than is normal, and these disorders often result in stress levels that interfere with the afflicted person's everyday life. Although anxiety disorders are often lumped under one heading, each type of anxiety disorder has its own characteristic causes or behaviors.

The main types of anxiety disorders are:

- Social anxiety disorder. This disorder is essentially excessive social self-consciousness, characterized by overwhelming fear of being judged, embarrassed, or ridiculed by one's peers in everyday social situations.

- Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This disorder is the result of a traumatic event, which often involves physical harm or the threat of physical harm. There are other factors in the cause of this disorder, however, as not everyone who undergoes a traumatic experience ends up suffering from PTSD. People suffering from PTSD may have terrifying flashbacks, avoid certain aspects of their life, or experience emotional numbness.

- Phobias. There are many types of specific disorders that fall into this category, from agoraphobia and fear of flying to fear of snakes, spiders, or heights. The intense fear caused by a phobia may, depending on the specific phobia, make it difficult for the afflicted person to live a normal life.

- Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). OCD is characterized by excessive, unwarranted fears, known as obsessions, that lead to unnecessary compulsive behavior. A common manifestation is compulsive, repetitive hand washing due to an inordinate fear of germs.

- Panic Disorder. This disorder is commonly referred to as "panic attacks". These panic attacks strike suddenly and repeatedly, and these feelings of terror are often accompanied by physical symptoms such as palpitations, chest pain, sweating, and sometimes choking.

- Generalized anxiety disorder. This disorder encompasses any other kinds of excessive, unrealistic worry or stress.

Causes

Although the exact cause of anxiety disorders is unknown, these disorders have been classified as a type of mental illness. Scientists have shown that there are many factors affecting the cause and onset of this type of illness, including:

- Chemical changes in the brain. There is a set of chemicals in the brain that controls mood, memory, and emotions, and the balance of these chemicals can be affected by many things, including severe or long-term stress. There may also be changes to brain structures that can occur and result in changes in mood and emotions.

- Genetic predisposition. Studies have also shown that anxiety disorders tend to run in the family. Other factors, such as environmental stress or trauma, can trigger a disorder in people with a genetic susceptibility. For example, although experiencing trauma is a precursor to PTSD, not everyone that experiences a traumatic incident will develop this disorder. It is thought that genetic predisposition is another factor in the development of PTSD.

- Environmental stress. Environmental factors include traumatic events, which often trigger the development of a mental disorder from a genetic susceptibility.

Symptoms

Depending on the type of anxiety disorder and its severity, the symptoms can vary quite a bit. There are, however, several general symptoms that many people with anxiety disorders experience. These general symptoms include both emotional and physical symptoms, which can occur simultaneously or separately.

Emotional symptoms include frequent, overwhelming fear as well as flashbacks to traumatic experiences. Some people also experience nightmares or obsessive, overwhelming thoughts that they can't control. These emotional symptoms are often accompanied by physical symptoms, including shortness of breath, palpitations, sweat, a dry mouth, nausea, dizziness, and numbness of the hands or feet. Some people also experience trouble sleeping, and people suffering from OCD exhibit compulsive, ritualistic behaviors. For other people, it often feels like they are having a heart attack when they are having a panic attack.

Depending on the type of anxiety disorder, which can be determined by the symptoms, different treatment methods are recommended. Often, these disorders are treated with psychotherapy, medication, or a combination of both treatment methods.
