The Risks of Bathtub Refinishing

Bathtub refinishing or bathtub re-glazing can be efficient in terms of both time and money. However, it has its own set of risks. Many of the risks have to do with the chemicals that are used to peel off the old surface of the tub, primarily dichloromethane or methylene chloride.

Dichloromethane is highly volatile and is thus easy to vaporize and scatter in the air. Even worse, the substance itself is colorless and has a sweet-smelling scent. If someone inhales the dichloromethane gas, the gas gets metabolized by the inhaler's body into carbon monoxide. Too much carbon monoxide will lead to carbon monoxide poisoning, which can induce loss of concentration, headaches, flu-like effects, brain damage, and even death in high amounts. Other disorders resulting from the inhalation of dichloromethane gas include hepatitis, optic neuropathy, and possibly several cancers. Meanwhile, chemical burns will befall someone who has skin contact with the liquid itself.

According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, which is a part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were 14 recorded deaths since 2000 that have something to do with the inhalation of stripping agents that have high amounts of dichloromethane. In 2013, both the NIOSH and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration rolled out guidelines for workers on how to properly shield themselves from the dangers of dichloromethane. First of all, alternatives to dichloromethane must be used to strip the tub's surface. Second, proper ventilation must be observed for the gases coming from the noxious chemicals to easily escape. Bathroom windows are usually small and will not provide proper ventilation. Specialized exhaust ventilation units will do the job. Third, avoid spills and leaks as much as possible. Fourth, use personal protective equipment that is suitable for handling dangerous chemicals such as suits, gloves, and respirators. Fifth, use long-handed tools to prevent direct contact with the bathtub full of dichloromethane liquid. Sixth, the entire bathroom must be covered with heavy duty plastic sheets to prevent dust and spray fumes from reaching the other parts of the house. Finally, evacuate the room immediately after applying the stripping agents.

Alternatives to dichloromethane such as acids and isocyanates can be used. However, they also have their own sets of risks. Acid burns are the primary thing to watch out for when handling strong acids, and inhaling acid vapors will damage the lungs. Isocyanates, meanwhile, can worsen asthma besides the implied risk of respiratory and gastrointestinal system damage. These chemicals also cause skin inflammation. To avoid the risks from those alternative stripping chemicals, the same protective measures must be enforced .

Though there is such a thing as DIY bathtub refinishing, the same harsh chemicals to strip the old surface are still there. Therefore, it is better to leave bathtub refinishing to well-versed professionals who know all the risks involved.
