Ideally, Facebook was created as a closed community for students from Harvard. However, since it has gone public in 2004, its purpose has expanded far beyond that-from being personal towards being more business-oriented platform. This idea of innovation of Facebook into a new marketing opportunity is further driven by the growing population of social networking sites users.

For instance, Facebook started to reduce the appearance of excessively promotional posts i.e. posts that insist on viewers to buy products or install new applications and posts that have repeated contents. In so doing, Facebook even reached greater revenue than Google, and positioned itself as the top platform as far as advertising is concerned.

However, contrary to what the majority think, Facebook does not aim to ruin small businesses with their current system developments. Business owners should also understand that innovations in the features of Facebook aim to give better place for its function as an advertising platform to take place. Logically, it is the job of small business owners to keep up with the changes in the way Facebook serves as a marketing ground and not the other way around that is, if they really wanted to expand their businesses. In the first place, spending for an advertising campaign is part of the over-all concept of marketing.

Despite the confusion among small business owners, Facebook is still a promising advertising avenue. Marketing analysts know that it is not yet done with its momentum as far as advertising is concerned. Facebook developers are working on so many things to establish a great foundation for their targeted advertising campaigns ensuring further revenue growth in the years to come.

In general, small business owners should not give up utilizing social media sites as potential revenue generators. The world does not move backwards, and the role of Facebook and other social media sites for the next five years in business world is undeniably foreseeable. So the idea that free advertisements and marketing are gone should be gradually accepted and businesses should cope with the social media changes instead.
