Sweden can make quite the impression to any traveler. Because of the success of musical sensations such as Abba, Swedish House Mafia, Avicii and The Hives, not to mention its rich history that dates back to the time of the Vikings, it is accurate to say that it is a country of many surprises.

The country is located in Northern Europe and is nestled snugly with its neighbors Finland, Denmark, Norway and Germany. It has a temperate climate despite being positioned in the northern latitude. It also enjoys four distinct seasons and relatively mild temperatures throughout the year - another characteristic that makes it popular among travelers.

Stockholm, the country's capital, is located along Lake Mälaren and by the Baltic Sea. It is the most densely populated region in the country. It is the focal point of many of the country's political, social, and economic institutions. And as time went by, it has amassed a good number of buildings, palaces, and museums.

With regard to museums, Stockholm has extraordinary taste. The Moderna Museet contains a number of the greatest compendiums of twentieth and twenty-first century art, combined with a fabulous restaurant and plenty of activities for kids. Equally popular is the open-air museum and zoo called Skansen. It was founded in 1891 and it is just right for a family outing. Near Skansen is the Vasa Museum that houses a centuries old Vasa ship that was taken from Lake Mälaren.

For those who are fascinated by film-making, the Filmstaden film studio is a good place to go to. Some famous movie actors like Greta Garbo and Ingrid Bergman have done their work there. A Millennium Tour caters to those who are fans of Stieg Larsson's crime fiction series, the Millennium Trilogy.

Can't get enough of the attractive sights? The ornate designs of the renowned Royal Palace (Kungliga Slottet) is also in Stockholm. Constructed in 1697, it has a total area of 61,210 m² (658,850 sq ft), making it somewhat larger than the Winter Palace in Saint Petersburg and a bit smaller than the Palace of Versailles in France. Within the palace, tourists may get a glimpse of how the royals of old lived. The royal apartments and the treasury are among the spots regularly visited by tourists from around the globe. Adjacent to the palace is Old Town (Gamla Stan) which was founded in 1252. It is a terrific example of a well-preserved historical site from the Middle Ages.

The Stockholm Cathedral (Storkyrkan) is the oldest building within the Old Town. Built in 1279, it was devoted under the care of Saint Nicholas, and it remains to be the main church in the diocese.

Sweden has most definitely embraced the modern and the medieval. For tourists, there are a lot of hotels that offer good accommodations. Hotels are said to be cheaper during the Swedish summer holidays. The summer holidays are two months and two weeks long from Midsummer until mid-August. In any case, hotel prices are significantly decreased from Fridays until Sundays. It is advised that would-be visitors book a hotel in advance to avoid paying exorbitant prices.
