How My Grandma Impacted My Life

Have you neglected to pay tribute to someone that was or is the wind beneath your wings? I have. My late Grandma. My paternal Grandmother was a vibrant but stern religious woman. She made a lasting and profound impact on my life even though she died when I was in my early 20's.


I did not know what life was like before Grandma because she was always in my life during my childhood and early adulthood until her passing. It was difficult getting use to not having her around at first but my best memories of her remain with me. Her words and her voice speak to me to this day.

Grandma taught me to be a proper young lady. That God is always watching. If ever I felt a tinge of doubt about whether what I was about to do was wrong or right, it was because she instilled that in me. She and I had a special relationship because she did not have any daughters and I was her first granddaughter. She lived in my home while I was growing up until I was eight. If my siblings and I were not on our best behavior, we knew where the "switch" tree was.
Though she barely had a sixth grade education and went to work in factories as young teen, she still taught me how to read before I started school. She loved hearing me read out loud everyday and I enjoyed reading to her. She would also read all the classic nursery rhymes to me and my brother that is a year older than me. She would read them with such enthusiasm and wonder, we would beg her to read them over and over again. I loved hearing her read "Hickory Dickory Dock" and "Old Mother Goose." Her reading would fill my head with pictures and she always made sure I had plenty of crayons, pencils and paper so I could draw for hours if I wanted to. She always made my brother and me go outside and play when it was daylight. We would find things to make houses and castles out of and play make-believe all the time.

Now 20 years after her passing, I believe she is looking down on me proud of her granddaughter knowing my stubborn will, big heart, and imagination all stemmed from the time she spent raising me with a loving heart and proper values. I miss her dearly.
