Keep your knife sharp. There is a saying that a sharp blade is safer than a dull one. This is especially true for knives you use regularly. Attempting to cut a piece of meat using a dull knife is more dangerous than using a sharp-edged one, because you exert more pressure on the action and increases the risk of letting the knife or the meat slip. To avoid this, make sure you regularly keep your knife sharp by using a whetstone or diamond stone.

Ask help from knife experts. For maintenance of antique knives, or for repair of damaged ones, it would be best if you bring them to a knife expert or knife shop that can do the job for you. The worst thing that could happen is that you try to fix the damage yourself, and only end up making it worse. Remember that a vintage collectible knife is a delicate item, and therefore needs proper care.

Maintaining antique knives requires time and effort, but is well worth them. For collectors whose main goal is to trade and sell their items at a higher price, keeping a well-maintained collection is a must, especially if they want their investments to pay off.
