The melting of the polar ice caps has been a great concern over the last couple of years. Its effects are clearly being felt today with all the tsunamis and evidence of climate change all over the world. The meltdown of the polar ice caps also affected the marine life. Some animals endemic to the region are slowly dying because of the increase in temperature that seems to melt the polar ice caps. Their homes are evolving and continuously changing as the ice melts.

It is said that the seas and the oceans are among the last frontiers on planet Earth. Man has only just scratched the surface where the discovery of marine life is concerned. Man has yet to discover millions of underwater creatures. With the advent of the melting of the polar ice caps, and the rise of the sea levels all over the world, these deep-sea creatures seem to be rising to the surface as well. Increase in sea levels has also affected the ocean currents, paving the way for sea life to change their pattern along with the currents.

Earth is vastly made up of water. Naturally, seafood has become one of the main sources of nourishment for mankind. Climate change has brought about new seafood up to the surface. While it is hard to tell whether the sea creatures discovered by scientists are safe for consumption, it might be best for you to stick to the ones that are known as safe to eat.

To satisfy your palate of a different kind of seafood, here are some edible sea creatures you might not know about. Some of these are not available in the US:

Gong-gong - Typically found in Asia, it is similar to escargot in France. It is cooked with its shell intact and the meat is pulled using a fork. It is chewy and squishes in your mouth while you chew it. It is usually cooked spicy in some Asian countries.

Australian Flathead - can be deep-fried, filleted or grilled. This fish is dangerous to catch as it has two poisonous spines that also make preparing it dangerous to your health.

Florida Pompano - This fish unique to Florida has a mild taste. It is a favorite of some chefs for its beautiful appearance. One can cook it on parchment with a hint of lemon, salt, pepper and baked or steamed to perfection.

Hakarl - is Iceland's very own fish dish and is one deadly seafood known to have claimed lives of people who have dared to consume it. Hakarl means "fermented shark". If that is not enough to turn you off, its smell is extremely fishy and is known to be an acquired taste. Some of the most famous food connoisseurs have called this dish foul and disgusting, but people of Iceland beg to differ.

Different folks have different tastes in seafood dishes. With the rising of the sea levels and evidence of climate change, what is important is buying seafood that is caught in ways that does not affect the environment in a negative way. Some seafood are farmed, which makes for a sustainable market, meaning there are more than enough of these kinds of fish to go around for decades and can be safely eaten without depleting its sources.
