The first thing to be cautious about is the differences of each general category of women fragrances from simple colognes to their more complex terms of eau de cologne, eau de parfum, eau de toilette, and others. They have minor differences which do not necessarily affect their scents, but having a basic understanding of these terms is an advantage when choosing the right type of fragrance to match the purpose for which you are going to use it.

Next is getting familiar with different kinds of fragrances based on how they are scented. Women fragrances have generally four basic types of scents: Fruity/Citrus, Floral/Sweet, Spicy/ Oriental, and Wooden Chypre. Women can choose the scent which they feel describes them the most.

Citrus  as the name suggests, this type of scents are extracted from fruits which belong to the citrus family. It can be an orange, lime, tangerine, lemon, and mandarin. For women fragrances, this type of scent has a light smell but energizing enough to indicate natural vigor. It also has a sharp yet faint characteristic, and is a perfect mood enhancer as well.

Floral/Sweet - out of all kinds of women fragrances, floral scent is undoubtedly the one with the most femininely sweet touch. This is made out of flowers, usually roses, but it is perfect to blend it with other scents which have a spicy and strong touch. Although this can be the type which is suitable for teenagers, blending this with a stronger scent is perfect for those aiming for romance and sensuality.

Wooden Chypre - this kind of scent is different from the rest because of the combination of woody and mossy tones; that's also why fragrances with this scent are sometimes called Francis Coty. Its fresh, leather-like and wild nature makes it very suitable for men, but this is also a perfect choice for women who have secretive, mysterious, and strong personalities.

Spicy/Oriental  this is also a combination of fresh, organic and floral elements, very characteristic of the oriental mood. The strong scent of this perfume matches women with a more mature and stronger character.

Lastly, think about the final note of the perfume. Women fragrances have three notes and the final note determines its true scent because the first and second notes fade quickly. So when you are trying the cologne, spray an ample amount onto a card and allow the scent to dissipate for some time before smelling it. Do not keep on spraying on the same card because it would be hard to determine the final note then.

All in all, if you re going to shop for fragrances, you have to take things slowly  think of all these guidelines and considerations, and you ll be on the right track.
