The first thing to know when taking care of a reptile is that this kind of animal needs a habitat. Unlike cats and dogs, they cannot be simply set free to roam around the house. They can be dangerous and even deadly, especially if you have a pet snake. These animals should be kept in a terrarium. A terrarium serves as the controlled environment in which your pets can thrive best. As the pet owner, you can still bring your pets outside once in a while, but make sure not to leave them unattended. The kind of terrarium you purchase would depend on the kind of reptile you have. There are snakes and lizards that do not grow beyond a few inches, whereas there are some that can grow longer than you.

Next, you would need to choose an appropriate food. Feeding them cat or dog food is not recommended. The food would depend on their species. Iguanas are herbivores so they eat mainly lettuce. In the wild, they can thrive by eating insects as well. Since pet owners can choose what iguanas can eat, it is better to offer them an herbivore diet. Snakes are often fed with mice and small chicks and lizards with insects such as crickets, grasshoppers, moths and flies. Most pet owners prefer to kill the animals first before feeding them to their snake.

Caring for Your Pet Bird

The specific diet for your pet bird depends on their species. Generally, meals that include nuts, corns, beans, sunflower seeds, rice, fruits, vegetables, and even bugs are fed to pet birds. Keep a daily log of what they eat. As a pet owner, choose foods that will provide them with ample nutrition.

It is not unusual for them to have parasites living in their feathers. In case your pet does have these pests, ask your pet store or pet supply shop if they can recommend a treatment. Be familiar about the common bird parasites in your pet. If your pet bird is shedding its feathers or if he is crusting around the eyes, bring him to the vet clinic.

If you have cats, always make sure to secure the locks of the cage. Some species such as parrots, Myna and cockatoos can pickup how their owners open or close their cages. They are smart pets and can even be trained to learn a few hundred vocabulary words.

Pet birds or reptiles have specific needs different from those of cats and dogs. Fulfill the basics first before intending to train or discipline them.
